Training and development

  • Sterling & Law is client focused. We target the corporate and high net worth marketplace.
  • We expect our advisers to provide an outstanding financial planning service, while operating within and adhering to essential compliance standards. We will provide training, mentoring and coaching to facilitate this process.
  • Once appointed, you will be assigned to a compliance supervisor who will monitor your progress through our Training and Competency Program. The aim is to arrive at ‘competent adviser status’ as soon as possible.
  • We recognise individual prior learning and achievement. Our training and development programme is adapted accordingly. Its length varies depending upon your existing level of experience.
  • For those with little or no IFA experience, Sterling & Law provides training modules on the basic skills required to operate effectively as an IFA.
  • Sterling & Law uses cutting-edge technology to minimise paperwork. Our in-house training will enable you to compare and select products and providers, forward and retrieve documents online, as well as build and manage your databases. In addition, it will help you analyse your performance parameters and write excellent reports for your clients, speedily and efficiently. Our aim is to enable you to assist your clients promptly and efficiently.
  • Once competent in these basic skills, we will then focus our training on developing your expertise in specific market sectors – for example, corporate financial planning, retirement control, group risk, employee benefits and high net worth wealth management.
  • Sterling & Law is committed to promoting your personal development. The company will actively support you to achieve your diploma, if you have not already done so, and point you in the right direction for programmes geared towards gaining chartered status and other appropriate qualifications.
  • Training and development is ongoing throughout your career with Sterling & Law. We hold sales meetings on a monthly basis, which focus on honing and refining your selling skills and enhancing the financial planning experience for your clients. You will also be kept abreast of the latest product developments. Essential information is also disseminated on a wide variety of topics.

You will have the opportunity to specialise in certain markets or sectors. Sterling & Law has access to comprehensive training resources and can assist you in this process.

Recruitment and selection process
Sterling & Law’s recruitment process has been developed to ensure that the company attracts and appoints high-calibre individuals who will add value to the business. Each candidate is expected to operate with the highest levels of compliance and integrity. Sterling & Law also admires tenacity, creativity and dedication. As a candidate, you will therefore need to be prepared to undergo our rigorous recruitment and selection process.

Basic selection criteria

  • Possess FPC 1, 2 and 3 or CF1-5 and be on track to be diploma qualified in time for RDR.
  • Have a stable career history with a maximum of three jobs in the last six years.
  • Have a minimum of 36 months’ experience if tied, or 12 months’ experience as an IFA.

Getting appointed

  1. On receipt of a suitable CV, we will invite you to attend an informal meeting with a Sterling & Law director. We will discuss your career history, expectations and interest in working with us. You are encouraged to obtain answers to any questions you may have.
  2. If both parties wish to proceed, a formal interview with two directors will be arranged. During the interview, we will discuss working practices thoroughly. You will be required to prepare a formal business plan for presentation at this interview.
  3. At your formal interview, we will study your business plan and discuss its core objectives. At this stage, we will clarify mutual understanding and assess the level of your commitment. If satisfactory, you will be required to complete an application form. References will also be sought.
  4. Credit and other data checks will be carried out.
  5. Sterling & Law will obtain references from various sources. We will approach past employers, as well as two professional and two personal referees. Your current employer will not be contacted without your express permission.
  6. Your key performance indicators will be assessed.
  7. You will be booked on to our two-day induction course. Study material will be provided. A member of the Sterling & Law team will explain the course content with you. You may be asked to participate in role plays and/or read case studies. We will also explore your development needs.
  8. On the course, you will be assessed for competency to FPC or CF standards.
  9. On successful completion of the induction course, your application will be submitted to the FCA.
  10. Once appointed, your training and development programme will begin. We will work closely with you to ensure that the objectives set out in your business plan are SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely.
